Swedish Gambling Regulator Fines ATG For Self-Exclusion Error

Sweden’s gambling regulator Spelinspektionen has fined horse racing and sports betting operator AB Trav och Galopp (ATG) SEK 2 million (€186,261) due to self-exclusion irregularities.

According to the regulator’s investigation, ATG’s self-exclusion feature was unavailable on its websites and apps for a period of two weeks. The company informed Spelinspektionen of the issue on February 15th of this year and stated that the feature was unavailable to those logged in via mobile bank ID from January 13th to January 28th due to a technical issue.

ATG discovered the issue on January 27th and had the feature up and running again on the 28th January. ATG said that it was not possible to say exactly how many players who wanted to use the self-exclusion feature during that time were affected, but it estimates this figure to around 100 players.

The feature was available to customers who contacted ATG support and there were three people who took up this option during the outage period. Spelinspektionen’s own self-exclusion program, Spelpaus, was available on ATG sites and apps during this time.

According to ATG, the issue has been resolved and there are new protocols in place to ensure that this does not happen again.

When making its decision, Spelinspektionen took into account the fact that ATG resolved the issue as soon as it was discovered. However, the regulator stated that it cannot condone the removal of a vital service due to a technical error. Spelinspektionen took into consideration ATG’s GGR for 2021 of SEK 5,5 billion (€512 million) and set the fine at SEK 2 million (€186,261).
