Macau GGR up 24.8% month-on-month to MOP$3.34 billion in May

Macau’s gross gaming revenue grew 24.8% month-on-month, down 68.0% year-on-year, to MOP$3.34 billion (US$414 million) in May, boosted by a strong Labor Day holiday and slightly eased border restrictions with mainland China.

However, according to information released by the Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau, May’s GGR was still lower than March when GGR reached MOP$3.67 billion (US$454 million).

For the first five months of 2022 combined, GGR was down 44.0% to MOP$23.79 billion (US$2.95 billion).

As reported by Inside Asian Gaming, the month began on a stronger than expected footing with 136,647 visitors arriving in Macau during Golden Week (30 April to 4 May), at a daily average of 27,329 visitors.

This also included the highest single day tally of 2022 so far with 41,544 visitor arrivals on Saturday 30 April.

Macau’s Novel Coronavirus Response and Coordination Center had earlier relaxed the validity period of mandatory COVID-19 virus test results from 24 to 48 hours on 20 April, and then again to 72 hours on 24 April.

However, there are concerns over the potential for any further improvements in visitation amid recent reports that mainland China is actively applying visa controls on frequent gamblers.
